Golf exercise benefits are many. Golfers have struggled for years with their games and have become very frustrated. I can’t tell you how many times I play with golfers who are about to quit the game.

To explain golf exercise benefits to a golfer takes a little convincing, but in a short amount of time they become believers. There are so many I can’t possible list them all in this article, but you will be motivated to take this approach.

Some of the main golf exercise benefits are; improved power for longer drives; dramatically improved stability for better consistency; a body that moves freer, removing tension from the swing; more energy for 18 holes; elimination of injuries; weight loss; improved concentration due to a reduction in fatigue; I could go on-and-on.

Improved Power For Longer Drives

If your body is weak and inflexible you will not be able to achieve optimal swing mechanics. Such things as a full shoulder turn, with minimal hip rotation; creating and retaining torque (energy) in your core for maximum clubhead spead; proper sequence of motion with muscles firing at the appropriate time; being able to swing just a little harder on long par 5′s and still be in control.

Removing Tension From The Swing

When you improve your flexibility (range of motion specific to your golf swing) you are able to make a full backswing with no tension in the supporting muscles of the swing. Like the shoulders, lower back, upper back (lats), and even the wrists. It is known in most athletics that less tension equals more power.

More Energy For 18 Holes

One of the biggest culprits of back nine blow-ups is loss of energy resulting in poor mental confidence and swing mechanics. I see this one all the time when I play…golfers who are out of shape and lack appropriate fuel intake and maintenance. Having energy for 18 holes builds tremendous confidence and a higher level of play.

Golf injuries are prevalent among all amateur golfers, especially senior golfers. The golf swing is a damaging movement on the human body. Swinging a club between 80-100 mph in less than a second can be traumatic. Golfers who don’t have an adequate level of golf strength and flexibility are susceptible to injury every time they swing the club. The lower back usually takes the brunt of the stress and strain. Then hips, knees, shoulders and even wrists. A stronger, more flexible golfer will avoid injuries indefinitely.

Weight Loss

I have worked with over 10,000 golfers via my online golf performance website and they all fill out an initial golf fitness profile. Since I review every one of them personally, I see how many of them have weight loss of 10-30 pounds as a goal. There are more overweight golfers on the course than fit ones. This is because golfers have not come to the conclusion the fitness plays a critical role in golf performance. Exercising will not only improve lean muscle, but melt fat away. To not only improve their golf, but lose weight is icing on the cake for any golfer.

How many times have you had a good score going into the back nine only to have a couple of blow-up holes that ruined your score? It happens all the time. Why? If you have the least bit of hesitation, move on to the next golf trainer until you find one you feel will help you the most.

Now the bad news!

A golf trainer is a specialized professional and will not be cheap. Most of you will not have the the luxury to have a golf trainer one time, let alone 3 to 5 times a week, every week. This would cost in the thousands of dollars every month.

The average, ‘qualified?golf trainer will charge anywhere from a low of $40 per session to a high of over $250. The more experienced the golf trainer, the more they will charge.

So what are you options if the above scenario is a little too out of your economic reality?

The next best thing is to get some golf fitness videos (dvds) that take you through the entire golf fitness session from start to finish…including stretches, warm ups, cool downs and advice.

This is the next best thing to having a golf trainer in person. I have been fortunate enough to receive hundreds of emails and letters from golfers who have greatly benefited from this format of training.

There are not too many fitness and/or fitness videos (dvds) on the market that take you through an actual workout. Most of them show you the exercise and discuss the do’s and don’ts.

What you really need is a fitness videos (dvds) that takes you step-by-step through the workout so you have an idea of proper technique, pace of the session and a huge sense of satisfaction when it is done.

Then to have the wherewithal to put that video (dvd) back in the player in 48 hours and do it again. And again. And again. This will give you the best, most quickest results.

You really want to make sure it is a ‘complete workout? Not just exercises and then you have to figure out how to put them together in a workout format. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve purchased workout videos only to have to figure them out on my own.

What a big waste of time and frustration!

What I didn’t see in most of these books was dynamic (movement) stretches, especially for core flexibility. The golf swing is a rotation, therefore it only makes sense to incorporate as many core rotational movements, stretches and exercises into your routine as possible.

This is more prevalent in the senior golfer. He/she has lost a large amount of core rotation and in return massive yards off the tee. That’s the biggest complaint I hear among senior golfers is their lack of distance off the tee.

But, what’s frustrating for me is that same golfer will buy more equipment, take more lessons and hit more balls and not see improvement. This is because the “root cause?has still not been approached.

Until you fix the “machine? you will not see improvement. Your body’s physical capabilities dictate your golf swing efficiency and power. Until you realize this and make the commitment to improve this, you’ll continue to be a very frustrated golfer.

The great thing about golf swing flexibility exercises are they don’t require any equipment and can be done anywhere. In your office…at your home…even on the golf course. There is no reason (excuse) not to participate in a golf swing flexibility exercise program.

If time is a valuable commodity you don’t have a lot of, then doing just 3-4 rotational stretches daily and you’ll see a huge difference in your power and distance.

There is only an “upside?to doing it.

How about adding 30 yards to your drives? No more back pain? Feeling like your 20 years younger and playing like it too?

I could go on and on about the benefits, but you’ve got to believe it and do it.

When training, on the driving range or wherever you can practise, a useful technique for lining up is to place a club on the floor and check that you’re your feet, hips and shoulders line up with each other, the shoulder alignment is particularly crucial because your body turn starts with your shoulders.

Ideally, you should be lining your body up slightly to the left of the target (slightly to the right for left hand players), as opposed to trying to line your body up with the target itself.

On the course a simple test to see if this is the case, is to look at the target, if you can see your left shoulder, then you are lined up to too far to the right (visa versa for lefthanders), your shoulder should be just out of sight.

Poor Alignment can have several affects, these are all negative. Aligning too far to the left most commonly leads to the slicing of the ball, this occurs because you are not parallel to the line running from ball to pin. As a result the backswing is limited so an ‘out to in?swing results. As a consequence the club face is slightly open on impact which generates side spin on the ball. This leads to the common problem which is the slice which I will explain in another article.

If you align too far to the right, the opposite will take place and a hook will occur due to the ‘in to out?swing of the club, although quite common with beginners and inexperienced players.

Often they will subconsciously become aware of this and try to adjust mid-swing, over adjusting by opening up the clubface as impact approaches. This again results in the slicing of the ball, which is very difficult to control and usually leads to ‘the rough?

Alignment is an often overlooked and crucial part to any golfer’s game and therefore must be addressed for you to succeed at any level of golf. For as long as you’re alignment is out, you will never be able to consistently hit straight accurate shots and will increasingly find yourself hooking or slicing into the rough, turning those pars into bogies and taking your round from a 75 to 85.

So get that alignment sorted and go shoot some birdies.

Bend At Hips To Address Golf Ball

To achieve this initial movement takes strength and flexibility in not only the lower back, but the hamstrings and core muscle groups. If these muscle groups are limited, you will have a very difficult time achieving this simple move.

Flex In The Knees

A combination of bending at the hips and knees allows you to get to the ball. The shorter the club, the more the bend at both the hips and knees. If your quadriceps are weak, you will have a very difficult time maintaining the proper knee flex therefore causing you to create in improper golf stance…resulting in mishits and lack of distance.

Ankle Flexion

Take a look at the ankle joint of any golfer. It is definitely bent (flexed) to accommodate the bending of the knees and hips. If your calf muscles are weak/or tight, you will find it very uncomfortable to stay down at the ball. I see so many golfers with tight calf muscles and they never even knew it.

Spine Extension (Erectness)

This is a BIGGY! How many times have you seen the golfer (maybe even you) in his/her golf stance with the dread ‘camels back??This is very common among older golfers and is a KILLER in the golf swing. I could (and probably will) write a complete article on this physical limitation. But the bottom line is a rounded (weak) upper spine will dramatically hinder your ability to make a full backswing. Result: very short drives and a lot of embarrassment.

I just briefly covered just a couple of physical requirements of the golf stance, but I hope you know see the importance of addressing your physical limitations to achieve the end result.

To hit longer drives is the dream of every golfer on the planet! Even the professionals players want to hit longer drives. Is there a magic bullet? Do you really know what it takes to dramatically improve your driving distance?

I’ll bet your first answer will be a new driver at $500. Am I right? If not a driver…take more golf lessons. Am I getting warmer yet? If I still haven’t guessed right…hit more balls at the range? Am I scorching hot yet?

The key to hit longer drives is clubhead speed and solid ball-clubface contact. That’s it! Seems easy enough right?

Not!

The ONLY way to improve clubhead speed is to have optimal strength and flexibility in your core region. This is the area of your body that creates the torque on the backswing that is unleashed at impact.

How many times have you tried to swing hard and the ball didn’t go anywhere? I’ve been there. How many times did you “just not care?and all of a sudden the ball rocketed off the clubface.

That one time…you were relaxed and probably made a bigger backswing, therefore producing more torque (energy). But I’ll bet you have a hard to repeating that don’t you? That’s because your body has physical limitations that will not allow you to repeatedly make a full backswing and store that energy.

By incorporating rotational strength and flexibility exercises specific to the golf swing, you will see dramatic increases in clubhead speed and distance.

I’ve seen increases of 50 yards!

Now if you are already driving it 260 plus yards, you may not see a 50 yard increase, but you could realistically see a 30 yard increase.

It’s all about getting your body to move a little better within your golf swing.

So next time you get the motivation to improve your driving distance…think of working on your body…not swing harder.

With only a stability ball, exercise tubing and a pair of handweights. Grand total…under $60 for your “total golf fitness gym? That’s about one months membership to your local club that you’ll visit once or twice and never go back (but keep paying every month).

I want you to get that picture out of your head of the “muscle-bound?hulk, heaving hundreds of pounds with on arm, slamming it to the floor and letting out the infamous LOUD GRUNT for attention.

No..you’ll be doing golf-specific exercises with bands, balls and handweights that will quickly and directly benefit your golf swing. Sports conditioning or in this instance golf fitness training requires you to use your body in space incorporating balance, stabilization and sequence of timing just like your golf swing.

The direct correlation results in longer, more accurate drives, hitting a larger number of greens in regulation and walking off the course beating the pants off of your playing partners.

Now that’s “instant gratification?at its best!

And how about no more injuries! I’m dead serious! All those aches and pains finally gone. Forever! A stronger more flexible body will have a much higher level of resistance to pain and injury. And the added bonus is swinging “easier?and with much less effort, but seeing the ball go much further and straighter. It will feel like an “out-of-body?experience.

A few words of caution!

If you hear or see any programs touting they are golf fitness training and see the golfer and/or trainer using the basic machines in the gym, this is NOT golf fitness training. This is without a doubt “general fitness? Not altogether a bad thing, but won’t directly help your golf game.

Working on a stability ball, and using tubing and handweights you can mimic many phases of the golf swing and at the same time challenge your core stabilization, balance and muscular endurance. All critical factors in achieving optimal swing mechanics for 18 holes.

And…they’re fun to use. You’ll never get board. You can always make it more challenging from a balance and/or stabilization factor.

Just try to get one of those “muscle-heads?on a stability ball lifting the same heavy weights they use. Call the medics..cause it’s going to get ugly real quick.

You see…most people who workout in the gym never challenge their proprioceptive awareness (or simply…using their body in space). This is the key to great golf.

The stronger you can get your core stabilizers, coupled with increased rotational flexibility…you’re headed to an awesome game of golf. You’ll definitely be the envy of your foursome.

So don’t hesitate to get started on your golf fitness training right away!

Think carefully about what aspect of your game you would like to see better results in. There are schools that specialize in specific aspects of the game.

Some golf schools will, for example, concentrate solely on your swing whilst others will look to improve every aspect of your game. Think carefully about this because it will affect your decisions on which school to attend.

Budget

Like it or not, chances are you are not a millionaire. Thus, you will have to select a course with price in mind as prices can vary considerably, anywhere from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars. The price can vary due to the following:-

That may seem like a lot of golf courses for Las Vegas, but with almost 1.4 million residents and growing with an estimate of over 125,000 golfers in the Vegas Valley, and 30 million visitors per year with 600,000 of those playing golf, many feel it is still not enough ( but then again – is there ever enough golf courses? ).

The weather, for the most part, allows golfing to be enjoyed all year round. With an average of 320+ days of sunshine, you probably will be able to play golf – whenever you are planning to visit.

And remember – no matter how bad your last shot was, the worst is yet to come.
